We have all suffered from some traumas in our lives. By dictionary definition, trauma is “any event that has had a lasting negative effect”. We all know people who have lost loved ones, jobs, their financial security, health, relationship;  have been abused, physically and or mentally, or witnessed some traumatic event. We have seen them truly suffer as a result and sometimes it has left them debilitated. When you lose your peace of mind, or if you never had it, there could be serious physical and psychological consequences no matter what the cause. Triggers are the objects or situations that resemble a traumatic experience and result in the physical and psychological reactions that may not be based on reality. Regardless of the “triggers”, which could also be experienced in wars and natural catastrophes, the causes are generally found in earlier life situations. The continuous experience of being stimulated and suffering from symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, nightmare, insomnia, racing thoughts, anxiety, depression, and other troubling feelings are rooted in trauma.

EMDR therapy is an integrated model that incorporates aspects of psychodynamic, experiential, behavioral, cognitive, body-based, and systems therapies. It is a time efficient and comprehensive methodology for the treatment of the disturbing traumatic experiences that usually underline many of the clinical pathologies. It comprises and eight-phase treatment that includes the use of eye movements or other left-right stimulation.

EMDR therapy helps trauma survivors reprocess disturbing thoughts and memories, providing profound and stable treatment effects in a short period of time. Although neurobiological investigations still have not provided a definitive explanation, a number of psychological studies are being carried out and leading to links between EMDR and REM sleep, dual attention, and bi-hemispheric involvement.

When a disturbing event occurs, it can get locked in the brain with original picture, sounds, thoughts, feelings, and body sensations. EMDR seems to stimulate the information and allows the brain to reprocess the experience. That may be what is happening in REM or dream sleep as the eye movements may help to process the unconscious material. It is your own brain that will be doing the healing and you are the one in control. Dr. Sadigh creates a safe environment and teaches you relaxation techniques used for a life-time of desensitizing triggers.
