Depression

Depression TherapyAn estimated 33 to 35 million U.S. adults are likely to experience depression at some point during their lifetime. Depression affects men and women of all ages, races, and economic levels. However, research shows that women are at a significantly greater risk than men to develop major depression. Although anyone can develop depression, some types of depression may be more prevalent in certain families. Whether or not depression is genetic, this disorder is believed to be associated with changes to levels of chemicals in the brain such as serotonin and nor-epinephrine. Everyone may feel down or out of balance every now and then, especially when faced with challenging situations; but, when persistent feelings such as worthlessness, hopelessness, extreme sadness and irritability prevent the person from functioning daily routines, they may be suffering from a Depressive Disorder. If you feel that life is no longer worth living, feel stuck or see no way out, it might be time to seek professional help. Lack of pleasure and/or energy is also a sign of Depression.

Depression is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy and it should not be confused with normal grief in the aftermath of a major loss; although extended grief may lead to true depression. Depression may present differently based on age or cultural factors. Adolescents tend to show an irritable and agitated mood; older adults may or may not be irritable; and, certain cultural groups may mask their feeling to varying degrees.

Effects of Depression on Mind-Body-Emotions:

  • Mind: Negative thoughts like “I’m no good,” “no one cares about me, “life is pointless,” or “I’ll never feel better”, along with guilt, shame, or worries are frequently present. In the most severe cases, thinking may be minimal, and the person with depression may border on a comatose state. Suicidal ideation is common.
  • Body: Mustering the energy necessary for even the most basic tasks, such as getting out bed, preparing food, or bathing becomes difficult. Intense fatigue may be somaticized, leading to complaints about back pain, muscle aches, nausea, and headaches. Depression may lead to sudden tearfulness without an apparent trigger.
  • Emotions: Depression involves sadness, grief, anger, fear, shame, and other negative emotions. Affect may be tense and restricted or in severe cases, flat.
